Hey, there blog readers! Cristina Marrero here. Well, ARTronica V3.0 is over and I am happy to inform you that Jake O' Lantern won 1st Place and Best of Show.
Jake was drawn as a character design by Robert Hamblen. While working on a short film, (which will be seen in a short film competition near you), we came up with the idea for a flash back scene. Robert drew a series of 3 pencil drawings of Jake in different positions, and one pencil drawing of the background.
Once Robert finished the sketch drawings, he handed them to me and I went to town. I scanned the images into the computer and took them into Photoshop, where I then re-drew all the lines and put in his color. Once the color and lines were done, I put in the shadowing of the character. To make the eyes look like they were glowing, I simply took the eye layers and put an outer and inner glow to them. After doing this, I copied my layers and placed them into a group for safe keeping and then proceeded to copy said group. Once copied I merged the spare group to make one solid image of Jake.
The background was so detailed that I decided to, instead of going into the picture and re drawing all the lines, darken the individual lines with a filter, and edit certain problem spots. I then colored individual layers and shaded in lighting effects to make it look like sun rise or sun set. Utilizing filters (more specifically paint daubs), I made the background a bit more water color so that Jake would stick out in the picture.
Once the back ground was done I brought in Jake and turned it into a composite. Using a poster edges filter, I made Jake look a bit more cartoon like, and, at the same time, accentuating Jake.
Thus, was the creation of Jake O' Lantern.
